Health and Safety Policy for St Pauls Removals

St Pauls Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with household and commercial moves, packing, loading, transport, unloading and storage activities.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and disruption to our customers by systematically identifying hazards and controlling risks in all aspects of our removal operations. Health and safety considerations are integrated into planning, supervision and delivery of every move, from initial survey through to completion on site.

We recognise that effective health and safety management is essential to the quality and reliability of our services. We are committed to complying with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards relating to manual handling, vehicle operations, use of work equipment and safe systems of work.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management at St Pauls Removals holds overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. This includes providing clear direction, setting objectives and ensuring that adequate resources are made available to implement this policy.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for:

Planning removal work to minimise risks to staff, customers and the public.

Ensuring that risk assessments and method statements are prepared, communicated and followed.

Providing information, instruction, training and supervision appropriate to each role.

Checking that vehicles, lifting equipment, tools and personal protective equipment are suitable, maintained and used correctly.

Investigating accidents, near misses and safety concerns, and implementing corrective actions.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Every member of staff must:

Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Follow all safety procedures, training, signage and instructions given by supervisors or managers.

Use equipment, vehicles and protective gear provided for their safety in the correct manner.

Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, defective equipment, near misses, accidents or any health and safety concerns to their supervisor.

Cooperate fully with any investigation, inspection or health and safety improvement initiative.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We conduct suitable and proportionate risk assessments for our activities, including domestic moves, office relocations, specialist item moves, packing services and storage operations. These assessments consider hazards such as manual handling, slips and trips, falls from height, vehicle movements, use of lifting aids and the condition of customer premises.

From these assessments we develop safe systems of work and method statements that set out the safest way to carry out tasks such as lifting and carrying furniture, navigating stairs and tight spaces, operating tail lifts, loading vehicles, using ramps and securing loads. These procedures are communicated to all relevant employees and reviewed regularly.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a key risk in the removal industry. St Pauls Removals is committed to reducing manual handling risks by:

Assessing loads and routes before work begins.

Using appropriate lifting aids, trolleys, dollies, straps and other handling equipment wherever possible.

Training staff in correct lifting and carrying techniques, team lifts and communication during complex moves.

Planning access routes to avoid obstacles, unsafe surfaces and trip hazards.

Ensuring that staff do not exceed safe personal lifting limits and are encouraged to seek assistance when required.

All handling equipment is inspected and maintained in line with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements. Defective equipment is taken out of service immediately.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Safe operation of vehicles is essential to our work. Drivers and crew members must comply with company driving policies and all road traffic regulations. We ensure that:

Vehicles are regularly inspected, serviced and maintained in roadworthy condition.

Loads are planned, distributed and secured to prevent movement in transit.

Access and parking at collection and delivery addresses are assessed in advance where reasonably practicable.

Reversing and manoeuvring are carried out with assistance from a banksman whenever visibility is restricted.

Drivers are fit to drive, follow safe driving practices and take appropriate breaks.

Training, Information and Supervision

St Pauls Removals provides health and safety induction and role-specific training for all employees, including safe lifting techniques, use of equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness at customer sites and emergency procedures. Refresher training is delivered periodically and when procedures, equipment or regulations change.

Supervisors monitor working practices on site, provide guidance, correct unsafe behaviours and reinforce safe systems of work. Health and safety information is communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written instructions.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

Our operations often take place in and around customers homes, offices and shared spaces. We take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors, neighbours and the public by:

Planning access routes and work areas to minimise obstruction.

Using warning signs or verbal warnings when moving large or heavy items through shared areas.

Keeping walkways as clear as practicable and managing trailing cables, ramps and other temporary hazards.

Securing doors, lifts and access points where necessary and permitted.

Working considerately to reduce noise and disruption.

Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting

All accidents, injuries, vehicle incidents, property damage and near misses must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. We maintain records of such events, investigate their causes and implement corrective and preventive measures to avoid recurrence.

Employees are encouraged to report hazards and near misses without fear of blame, so that we can learn from them and continuously improve our safety performance.

Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work

We recognise the physical nature of removal work and the importance of staff welfare. St Pauls Removals seeks to ensure that employees are physically capable of their duties, are not required to undertake tasks beyond their capabilities and are encouraged to raise any health concerns that may affect their safety at work.

Reasonable access to welfare facilities, rest breaks and drinking water is provided or confirmed with customers where work is undertaken on their premises.

Review of this Policy

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or best practice. Revisions are communicated to employees, and updated procedures are implemented as required to maintain high standards of safety throughout our removal and related services.
